14. May 2018
The programme for the Danish Design Festival is now available at www.ddfestival.dk. The festival will take place from 23 to 30 May 2018 and will feature events throughout Denmark.
A market for families, Copenhageners and tourists where sustainable designs go hand in hand with do-it-yourself activities. A design conference where companies can find inspiration to jump-start their innovation engine, and open-house events where some of Denmark’s craftsmen and designers showcase their work.
It’s time for this year’s annual Danish Design Festival, celebrating the diversity in Danish design and crafts through exhibitions, events, business conferences and awards.
Multiple partners behind the festival
The partners behind the Danish Design Festival are the Danish Design Centre, Design denmark, Danske Kunsthåndværkere & Designere, Designmuseum Danmark, City of Copenhagen, Kolding Municipality and Trends & Traditions.
The partners state:
We’re delighted that we’ve once again devised a programme that represents craft and design in the broadest sense.
The Danish Design Festival was founded as a joint platform for all of us working in the field of design and craft who can see the enormous potential and momentum currently favouring Danish design. Danish design is benefitting from widespread attention and has never been more relevant – both in the classical sense of furniture and interior design, and in the sense of innovative original crafts, digital design, welfare solutions and new approaches to innovation and development in businesses and in society at large.
Copenhagen is internationally renowned for its livability, urban design and sustainability, and Denmark is a favourite destination for design experiences.
Design conference will kick off the festival
The Danish Design Festival focuses on diversity and features events for everyone with an interest in design – from industry professionals to citizens and tourists.
The City of Copenhagen and the Danish Design Centre will kick-start the festival with the “Get your company’s innovation engine started” design conference on 23 May in “Børssalen”. The conference will give companies insight into how they can organise their innovation efforts and how, in this context, design is a valuable tool to handle companies’ digital growth challenges.
“We have a highly skilled design industry in Copenhagen. It’s visionary, innovative and has enormous growth potential. We need to nurture this potential far more actively in order to reap the benefits. Unfortunately, we’re not good enough at this yet. We need to position ourselves more strongly as a design city attracting widespread international attention. Therefore, the City of Copenhagen is supporting a number of events during the Danish Design Festival,” said Cecilia Lonning-Skovgaard, Employment and Integration Mayor of Copenhagen (Liberal Party of Denmark).
Design market for Copenhageners and tourists
At the Design X Change design market, the garden at Designmuseum Danmark will be buzzing with festival activities, focusing on sustainable design and targeting families, Copenhageners and tourists, who can have fun with do-it-yourself activities in the weekend 26 to 27 May.
Visitors will also be able to meet designers, craftsmen and companies who create sustainable design solutions on a daily basis – from jewelry design to electric cars and flower boxes for balconies. And workshop events will be open to everyone interested in learning how to dye textiles, make seed balls, separate or build toys from waste, and much much more.
The market will also take visitors behind the scenes when designers and craftsmen open the doors to their workshops.
Danish Design Award
The grand finale of the festival will be the Danish Design Award ceremony held at the Confederation of Danish Industry on 28 May. At the show, prizes will be awarded to some of Denmark’s most innovative design solutions, and subsequently the solutions will be displayed.

The Background of the Danish Design Festival
- The organisations behind the Danish Design Festival have joined forces to achieve greater synergies among players in the Danish design industry, by gathering a range of events during a limited period of time every year.
- By working together to promote and organise the different events, the organisations want to increase visibility, attract a larger audience, demonstrate diversity in the design profession, and showcase the potential of design to create value, debate, growth and quality of life.
- The Danish Design Festival is an open and inclusive alliance in which all organisations with a design agenda are invited to become associated partners.
- The founding partners and the associated partners collaborate on creating the content of the festival in the form of exhibitions, conferences, debates, design talks, award ceremonies and other related events.
